[Near as I Can Tell...] A Quick and Dirty Guide to Mods
Because some things should be quick. And dirty.
TL;DR: More speed = better.
Obviously there's some nuance to that; hence the remainder of this post.
----
Here's my quick and dirty guide to mods for beginners:
- Put mods on every character. You can see the most popular mods for each character on swgoh.gg here: https://swgoh.gg/stats/mod-meta-report/
- Do your best to match what's recommended.
- All of your arrows should be speed primary arrows. It's just easier to know this than to get fiddly with specifics per character.
Here's my not quite as quick and dirty but still quick and only slightly less dirty guide to mods for intermediate players. This strategy got me decent mods through about 6M GP without bankrupting me too often:
- There are several characters who don't want speed: JKL, zeta Paploo, Cere, Cal Kestis, and Merrin. Pretty much every other character gets speed as a secondary stat, the more the better.
- Grey mods below level 12 should be brought to level 12 (you can get fiddly and bring them up 3 levels at a time if you want to potentially save a few credits, but really, 12 is where most will go anyway). If, by level 12, your grey mod has between 0 and 4 speed on it, sell it.
- Green through gold mods that have speed as a substat should be leveled up to 12. At that point, sell any that have speed 5 or less, and keep the others.
- Any mod that has all of its bonus substats in speed should be enhanced to the next tier until it gets a substat that isn't speed.
- Put your fastest mods of the appropriate type on your best characters (again, using the swgoh.gg page linked above as a guide) and work your way down to your crappiest characters.
- Try to keep a reserve of 5-ish mods of each mod type to choose from when you get new characters or decide to move mods around etc..
Here's my final mod advice for advanced modders or people who just like fiddly info that's highly specific:
- JML prefers a Protection arrow that has a high speed substat (20+).
- JMK prefers an Accuracy arrow (for real) that has a high speed substat (25+).
- GG and Padme prefer Health arrows with high speed substats (20+).
- You'll want one or two critical avoidance arrow mods (preferably with speed substats) for tricky challenges or journey character battles such as the final phase of the GAS journey.
- You should keep a supply of Potency crosses with Potency primary stats and Tenacity crosses with Tenacity primary stats; they're very valuable, even if they have low speed. Personally, i don't keep ones with no speed, but I understand if you decide you want to, at least until you get some faster ones.
- If you have an excess of credits, then in the mod shop, you can and probably should buy any mod with 5 speed as a base substat. That gives a much better chance of higher speed than acquiring mods from mod battles (use those battles for enhancement gear instead).

All of that said, it is now VERY easy to filter and upgrade mods. I do the following:
- Have one filter for all unassigned mods that are not arrows and do not have speed as a substat. Call this filter "NO SPEED"
- Have one filter for all unassigned mods that are not arrows and do have a speed substat. Call this filter "UPGRADE SPEED"
- Have one filter for all unassigned arrow mods. Call this filter "ARROW UPGRADE."
First, filter by NO SPEED. Then select all, and level up using the "reveal all substats" button. The mod filter will then automatically remove any mods that gained a speed substat out. Select all again, and sell them.
Second, filter by UPGRADE SPEED. Select all, and level up to 12. Sort by speed, and sort in descending order. Manually select any mod with less than 5 speed and sell those mods. Then select all and level up to 15.
Finally, filter by ARROW UPGRADE. Sort by speed in descending order. Select any mod which does not have speed as a primary stat and sell it. Select any mod with speed as a primary stat and upgrade it to 15.
There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, so if you want to keep a mod for some reason, feel free. I've got a 140 offense mod with no speed that I keep because hot damn that's 140 offense! For example. Or if you want a specific mod for some reason or another, obviously you're under zero obligation to follow my guide here.
Cheers!
